I really don't know where to go from here re CD/DVD drive 'going', please help

Now I know the problem isn't with the CD/DVD drive itself, or the connections, why else could it be that the PC won't recognise a drive ?

At my wit's end with this ... :o(

Backup the registry by creating a restore point.

Click START, Run and type regedit

Navigate through the registry in the following way:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE >SYSTEM > CurrentControlSet > Control > Class > {4D36E965-E325-11CE- BFC1-08002BE10318}

If you see any listings for UpperFilter and LowerFilter, right-click and delete them. Exit out of the registry editor and reboot the computer. You can then navigate to My Computer or the Device Manager to see if the drives are now visible.
