problem with spell checker on Word 2007

My spell checker doesn't seem to be working properly. I went to "set language" and saw that the "do not check spelling or grammar" box was ticked so I unticked it thinking that this would work. However, when I then do a spelling and grammar check it says all is okay (I have put a deliberate mistake in the text to check it) and then when I go back to the "set language" box the "do not check..." box is ticked once more. Any advice?
thanks

There also seems to be a problem with your apostophe/inverted commas/quote key.

The box should be ticked for it to work.

Does the problem still occur if you highlight the text you want to check?

no, it works when I highlight the text but not when I just check the document.

I don't know why my quotes aren't working! Sorry if that was horrible to read, I didn't realise it wasn't working! I was just pressing shift+2

also, the box "do not check spelling or grammar" should not be ticked, because that would mean it would not check the spelling or grammar. Everytime I untick it and I go back to "set language" it is still ticked. It needs to be unticked so that it will check spelling and grammar.
This is different to mine- I don't have that option on Word- I have to tick if I want the spellcheck not to disable it.
Anyway, highlighting sems to be a workaround
