htc magic/ on screen typing

I've just bought a htc magic and can't manage the on screen texting etc. My fingers are only small but i keep hitting all the other keys! Does anyone have any tips? Will I just get used to it or should I take it??

Would it work with a pointer thing like a Nintendo DS uses?
I'm new to touch screens,so forgive my ignorance, could you use a pointer as Ethel said, for instance a toothpic ( file the point off to not damage the screen)

A stick won't work, neither will my fingernail! Kinda getting used to it but quite difficult and nothing like as easy as keys
