Surely such drastic measures aren't essential??

Maybe there are some progs using too much memory?

Maybe not enough memory in the machine?

Running a defrag "at all costs" - isn't that putting it in a "scary" manner for someone who is maybe not too sure about PCs??
Good heavens!

smith134 is being a bit too enthusiastic. As your computer is taking a long time to get started it is highly likely you have far too many programs starting automatically - programs that you may not use all the time.

Many programs install themselves themselves in the start up folder when you first put them on your pc - this includes office software, satnav, mp3, printer,, external drive software - the list is endless.

This all slows down boot up time and also uses up resources unnecessarily.

It is easily sorted. Click Start - run and type
msconfig

in the box. Click enter and click the start up tab. Take your time going through the list - a lot of it will be necessary to make your pc run properly and some will be your firewall and antivirus, which you do need to start automatically.

Untick the boxes you are sure you don't need. If you are uncertain about anything, google for information or ask here.
Click 'apply' and reboot your pc.

It is a good idea to defrag your pc periodically but it won't go bang if you don't.
