I keep getting this message in a little box from windows, what does it mean? The computer seems to be working ok if a little slow ( it is about 5yrs old). The message has appeared about 4 or 5 times in the last few months and disappears when I press the ok section.

It means that some program wasn't able to get the memory it needed while it was running line 1 of its code. There's nothing else you can tell from just that error message.
I had the same problem too using XP. It has been caused worldwide by last weeks Microsoft update which is replacing your IE7 with an update designed for Vista. The only way to resolve this problem is to go to all programmes and select accessories and then system tools and then restore point and restore to a time before last Thursday i.e restore the time to 18th June. Reboot and everything should be ok as in my case.

Microsoft is aware of this problem but needs to roll out a corrected update urgently.
