My dads laptop has a virus of some sort and we cant seem to get rid of it. We have run countless AVG scans but they cant seem to find anything. When the laptop is started up it complains that three differant system files are missing. System restore wont work and when try to bring up the Task Manager it says "Task Manager has been disabled by the administator".
All and any ideas welcome.
Thanks.

It may not be a virus but spyware / malware.

Try downloading and runing malwarebytes

first you need to log on as THE administrator and see if that makes a difference (I doubt it)

it sounds as if a couple of the basic system files have become corrupted - either because it crashed or was switched off at the wrong moment ... or perhaps the disk is on it's way out
or it could be as simple as
http://www.pchell.com/support/taskmanagerdisab led.shtml

if you google the error you'll find hundreds of hits

you could use the install disk to repair

or if you can backup your data a full reinstall is the best option ... but it's not t for the faint hearted
and you need to make sure you have all the drivers for your machine BEFORE you start
so many users blame h/ware & s/ware problems on virus issues, anything remotely goes wrong, ' its got a virus'...
The tech goes guys on here may say different ,no offence taken if they do , but from my experiences virus infected PCs are not as common as people think they are.

ACtheTROLL i love you, thats the Task Manager back only had time to quickly look at the posts but thanks guys will have a more detailed look later.

realy Mr smith ... we've only just met!!! ;-)

chas in my opinion you are right - as is VHG - malware is the real threat
I've been surfing with a machine for just short of a year - no virus - or any other sort of protection ... It's even on the red side of my router's DMZ ... I wanted a virus ridden machine for a course

I still scan it weekly (no fix)
it has a fair few popups ... an odd trojan or twenty .... but not a single virus that I can find.

the crims these days rely on idiot ware (please confirm your bank details!!) or trojans - and good old torrents

viruses are old school - the scanners are far too efficient for most - but they still do pop up .... occasionally
I have a confession AC , been on PCs for over 10 years, surfing most of that...never had virus protection of any sort on any of my PCs , got the std firewall installed nothing else.
AS yet never had a problem of any sort, as long as you stick to dont open anything you havnt requested or download anything from an unknown source etc. everything should be fine.
log in into the administrator and give the full permission to the user.

if the files are missing than try to repair the windows with the help of the boot able windows disk.

may be the malware/ spy ware are on the computer .

so download the anti malware and anti spyware from the internet and scan the computer in safe mode.

create a restore point before scanning the computer.
delete the temp and prefetch files from the computer
go to run type temp, prefetch and delete all the files.
I'm sure johnpol reads everyone else's answers and then just translates them into pigeon English to re-post a day or two later

Thats the funny thing johnpol78, there is only one account created and by default is the administator. Also i have already tried the system restore several times, it always looks hopeful but then says system restore uncomplete
