I want to buy a web cam in the UK and send it to a friend in USA as a gift...will it work okay or is the voltage difference over there a problem?

Yes, it will be fine. All webcams that I know of use a USB connection directly to the computer. This is universal (as in USB - Universal Serial Bus) and works on almost all new computers - PC's, Mac's and Linux/Unix boxes.
It's just a thought but you have tried visiting some US sits that sell webcams? In the US, it's way cheaper to buy stuff, and you can also avoid the overseas postage costs. The can ask the shop which you buy it from to deliver it for you, using their own courier service. It'd also get there alot quicker... and no doint in one peice.
