A very large screen and a very good graphics card will be essential. You won't get one suitable for 200 - a desktop would be better.

Ok - thanks - I did not think it would be that easy !!!
I think what you have seen for 200 is a "mini" laptop called a Netbook.

These have very small screens and keyboards, and dont usually have a CD or DVD drive so you cannot look at files (photographs) on a CD or DVD.

These would be totally unsuitable for someone to work with photography.

I will be blunt here, but if you dont know much about laptops or technology DONT go and get your husband a laptop as a surprise.

Get him (or both of you) to do some research on what you need in a laptop that will make it suitable for working with photography.

You are going to have to spend around 350 to 400 so take you time doing research.

I would say a 17" screen for example would be useful (most laptops only have a 15" screen).

It may be worth asking on a photopraphy forum to see what people suggest for a good laptop for a photgrapher.
I have to agree with barry1010, a desktop PC would be better.

I have a dekstop PC with a 22" screen and it is wonderful for looking at and working with photographs.

A 17" or 15" screen on a laptop means the image would be very small for him to work with.

Thank you
Software that many use for photo editing (those more serious anyway), is typically Photoshop. This requires a decent amount of processing power.

I agree with all of the above; if a desktop will do, then go for that.. You'll get much better value for money.

Also take note of the screen. Many laptops come with a shiny screen now, not matte. This has the effect of making colours look more vivid, but it's a bit of a pain for photo editing.

Thanks again
you can choose some software instead of a new laptop, Photoshop CS4 is special for it.

Beware, the above looks like spam to me.
Yes, pps is advertising his rubbish again.
stupid guy! I just tell you what I know and share it to you, ok, I am a poor student can't pay for the expensive software, but you can, go to the adobe site directly pay 1000$ for it. Anyway, if you do not like it, just ignore, why you report me? *******!
