What comes pre-loaded is entirely up to the manufacturer and/or retailer, and is usually nowt, or possible some antivirus.

Some include a trial version of Office, which will expire unless you elect to pay for it.

The only way to know is to read the specification of the particular machine you intend to buy.
use open office - it's free and compatible with word docs.
You can buy a version of Microsoft Office 2007 called Home and Sudent edition that costs around 60.

It includes Word, Excel and Powerpoint (and OneNote).

AND you can legally install it on 3 computers.

Also, if you work for a compny that has an enterprise license of Office you can install a version on your "home" computer either free or very cheaply. I think the National Health Service workers have this option for example.
Some OEMs include MS Works which has a word processor and a simple spreadsheet.

Wordpad that comes with Windows is more than enough of a word processor to suit most users. The vast majority of the features in Word are not used by most people.

You can dowload the Word viewer from Microsoft to deal with those who think sending you a Word document is a reasonable.
