it changed about 5 yrs ago from what I can remember
Optometrists examine and test eyes for disease, general health problems and defects in eyesight. They used to be called ophthalmic optician.

Opticians specialise in the design, fitting, and dispensing of eyeglasses, contact lenses, low vision aids, and prosthetic ocular devices, using the initial prescription from an Ophthalmologist.

They probably changed because more and more of these opticians started to employ optometrists who did the eye tests and general eye health checks in house.

yeeeeeaggggh you're back xx
yes 4get i just going to ignore ..i know its not me with the problem ! x
Because the 'c' is mispronounced and confusing to non-english speakers.

The new description has 12 letters (3 more than previous) and gives the operatives more scope for eye-testing. They do need all the help possible to qualify their costs!
