The name. They were originally known as video graphics adaptors.

These days they are frequently built into the motherboard so are not a "card" as such. High powered graphic adaptors for games and other advanced video requirements are still added on as cards.
... and if I had a penny for every client who's told me they don't need a video adapter, 'cos they only use there machine for e-mails and surfing...
