My computer works very slow.

My computer is very slow it's about 4 years old. works on microsoft programme's, i have removed all the programme's i no longer use, what else causes it to slow down? and to grind to a holt. Does anyone know what i can do? Thanks

Have you done a disc clean up, and a defragment?

you could also try running a spyware detecter (adaware is a good one) as spyware and tracing software can slow your system down a lot.

I will try your suggestions i'm having to use my daughters laptop in the meantime as mine is so slow. Thank you

Have you got two security progs running against each other, if so delete one.

Have you tried Disk Defragmenter and Disk Cleanup ? Do you have a virus filter in use ? Try disabling it. If you have created a lot of individual files, try bundling them into folders.
