on the number keypad above the number 7 there is a key that says num lock just press it. it stays until you press it again
it's a setting in the bios

Enter the bios by pressing a key as soon as the computer is turned on before windows start, the key is often either del or f2, but could be several other things depending on make of computer, look for a messege say somthing like

hit del to enter setup
or
f2 for setup

once in the bios look for a setting that will say something like power on numlock status

Sorry can't be more speficic but it's a little different for different computers

sounds good - i'll give it a try - thanks
Hmmm. With my desktop and using XP, the computer at startup remembers how the number lock was set on switchoff.
Kelly's Korner (one of the most useful tweaking sites on the web) has a vb script that will change the registry settings for you:

http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs_edits/num lock.vbs

or you can run regedit to do it yourself:

HKEY CURRENT USER\Control Panel\Keyboard\InitialKeyboardIndicators

0 = numberlock off
2 = numberlock on

If you want the numlock on at the Welcome Screen you also need to change:

HKEY USERS\.DEFAULT\Control Panel\Keyboard\InitialKeyboardIndicators (same number values as above).
