I checked my emails just 10 minutes ago, and i have two emails from Halifax building society. It says my online account has been choosen for security reviews, and I then have to enter a code which is sent in the second email. I dont know whether this real or fake, as my mum has my account in her name, and I've never used the internet for my account, so I can't see Halifax knowing my email address. Should i ignore it and email halifax and see?

Delete it. It's known as "phishing" and is a well-known scam. I've had dozens of these e-mails, strangely from banks I've never had accounts with.
Just delete it, there's lots of scams like this.

You can call Halifax to double check if you like but I don't think it would be worth your time.
Bound to be a scam. I get them all the time from all banks, building societies that I haven't even got an account with.
Delete it or inform Halifax, etc.
Fake for sure adamhornsby , there are a few on the go asking people to verify their account details and passwords and to click to complete . As the others have said , just delete it . You may well get another . :-) x
don't open any email you not sure
or know anything about. delete it
without opening it. it is spam. once
you open it you will be verifying your
email address is real and you wiil
continue to get junk mail from them.

I've just looked at halifax website and it mentions phishing. It says they never ask for security information, so it is a scam. Theres even some grammer mistakes.
Like it says at top:
'Halifax in constantly working to increase security for all online banking users'. Shouldn't that be 'is'?

No bank will ever email you about your security details. If you do online banking then confirmation of these details will be requested next time you log into your account.

Do not reply to them and report them as phishing mail if you have that option.
Hi Adam.

Believe me it is genuine.

What is your sort code and account number so I can confirm all is ok.

Also the exact title of your account.

does anyone do online banking on Halifax, the email to reply back to is: [email protected] ([email protected])

can anyone confirm that please?
Question Author
thats similiar, this one just reads a bit different
I had a similar email from NatWest a couple of weeks ago. I forwarded it on to the 'official' NatWest Fraud Office & hope that others would do the same.

Needless to say, we're not with NatWest.
Email asks you to confirm/update/verify your account data at NatWest by visiting the given link. You will be taken to a spoof website where your details will be captured for the phishers.

NatWest never send their users emails requesting personal details in this way.

The spoof website this email links to was not online at time of this report, but variations of the scam which link to working websites are bound to exist, so be wary! The website may have been taken down or disabled by the hosts, but quite often these websites are hosted on the personal computer of the phishers, so may only be online at certain times.

The REAL URL of the spoof website looks nothing like the actual NatWest URL.
But the scammers don't know you don't have an online account with that bank. They are nothing to do with the bank.

They send millions of these emails out to millions of email addresses, hoping they strike lucky.
There is an address you can forward the email to Adam. Scroll down to find the address:

thanks tiggerblue, forwarded the first email to that email address. ill see what happens now
Good. Send the other email as well and delete both from your inbox and your trash box. Hopefully you won't get anymore but if you do just do the same thing. If you get any from any other bank, go onto the banks website (NOT FROM THE EMAIL OF COURSE) and look on their security page for reporting phishing mail.
