Every time I start up the computer, I get a message box telling me that WAOL.exe has failed. The computer seems to work fine anyway. It sounds like it's something to do with AOL, but we don't even have AOL! What's going on?

Sounds like spyware to me. Run a spyware removal program to remove all the spyware from your pc. (Spybot search & destroy or Adaware are 2 of the most well known and both are free to download)
I get the same message sometimes. It never seems to have any serious effect on my computer either. I have got AOL though, and am pretty sure the WAOL message is something to do with it. Are you sure you don't have AOL somewhere in your computer? They are notoriously sneeky at hiding their software in systems, so even when you think it is uninstall, there is something still there. I don't think it's anything serious to worry about, but do a virus/spyware check just in case.
It seems there are "issues" with WAOL.EXE and Windows There are several references if you Google "waol.exe" http://www.google.com/search?q=%22waol%2eexe%22
