Amelia plans a trip from San Francisco to Honolulu, a flight to be done at a low elevation where she can watch for sailboats and sea creatures. In order to get the most assistance from the wind�and thereby increase her average ground speed�she decides to make the flight in ________ and to begin the journey by heading somewhat ________ of the shortest, great circle route to her destination.

The question is asking about the rather ancient science of "pressure pattern navigation". The Pacific High is established off the western U.S. coast in the summer months and the circulation of the low level winds would suggest a course somewhat south of the Great Circle route to take advantage of quartering tail winds.
