JVC, who invented the recording system, called it 'VHS' to stand for 'vertical helical scan', but this was far from user-friendly and it quickly got converted to meaning 'video home system'.

Originally, Vertical Helical Scan, but was found to be unmarketable so, Visual Home System was substituted by JVC, the inventor (Don't ask me what JVC stands for)...
