When I am away from my laptop and it goes into hybernation, i have to go to turn off computer at the blue screen with my name on it, when a click turn off computer the little windows box comes up sayinh cancel, turn off, retsart, and i click restart, but then one of those long narrow grey dialogue boxes comes up and says, 'other people are using this comoputer and if you switch it off their work may be lost' It says other users ARE using it, not MIGHT be using it, I have only ever used this laptop myself and only have my own profile on it, is it possible there is a virus in there somewhere?

No, the user still logged on is you.

When you are returned to the Welcome Screen after hibernation you may see that your account indicates there are still programs running.

As far as Windows is concerned the person trying to turn off the machine at the Welcome Screen may not be the person still logged in so the form of language used is not necessarily incorrect.
Actually, a more correct answer would be

possible virus? - possible! yes

but this is normal behaviour for Win XP.
