If you use a Mac, Final Cut Pro is an excellent bit of software for digital editing. If you're a PC user you might want to check out Adobe Premier or Avids Xpress DV. Most people in the industry that I know would lean towards using FCP on a Mac but at the end of the day it's down to what your hardware you use I guess...
