I'm sure this has been discussed here before but I am trying to rescue my daughter again!!
She has had endless problems with BT broadband which supplied the 'free' Norton. She has changed to Orange and is trying to install this. To do so she has to disable Norton (and hopefully will get rid of it permanently) At present she is without any broadband so cannot go online to try and resolve.
Is there something free that I can download and save for her to use. At present I have the laptop here and downloaded a programme which scanned and found multiple faults (of course) but requests registration (and money I imagine) so I'm stuck. Any help to my rescue much appreciated thanks

Thanks Clanad I have copied off the instructions from 'Dave' I wonder if I should follow instructions from step 5 because although there are symantec files present nothing came up with a norton search and it is not listed in the programmes. I will switch it on and see if I can find anything in common files for starters.

I have tried to remove symantec from common files but "access is denied ACD.spm" can anyone explain this please

I will certainly go there ZebUK. Have just supplied dinner for all the family of ten so will try it tomorrow. Earlier I did manage to download the remove Norton tool on to my PC transfer to daughters lap top it says its gone so we're definitely a step forward. But need to go over to her house (not far) to see if it will now connect to Orange with fingers crossed

Thank you very much for your interest
Hey,

I know you've done it now, but I work for BTBB Tech Help and we usually use this to remove all versions of Norton from customers PC's...and it's free!!

That's very kind of you petes_dragon. My daughter has now succeeded in connecting to Orange thank goodness. She has not yet set up any anti virus, is adamant that AVG, slowed the laptop down although just about all the family and friends I know are using it but she is listening to mixed advice from her colleagues at work I think. I believe she is considering paying for McAphee! In fact I used that for a few years and was quite satisfied and able to get answers on troubleshooting until I was recommended AVG with the added advantage of it being free. My daughter is also trying to add macromedia which is required by her 'slimming' programme and but at least she is back online thanks to help from AB and me so it may be one step at a time.
