I have just spent some time writing up an answer to a question which meant I had to check up some things in a book etc. Then when I tried to post it, I got the msg I needed to log in but I was already logged in. I have also lost the text I typed. Is it malfunctioning?

Glitches in the AB site are not uncommon. With anything more than a short answer, it's best to copy it (Ctrl-c) before posting it.
This happens whenever you take a long time to post an answer and is absolutely infuriating.

If I need to type a long answer I open up a word or notepad file, write it there and then copy and paste it.

Copying, as suggested above, is certainly a good idea for any answer which is long in itself or takes a long time to sort out. However, if you 'lose' an answer, as you describe above, click anywhere on the grey surrounds of the page with the message: 'log in to perform this action' (or words to that effect). You should then be offered a menu with the word 'Back' at the top. Clicking on that word should miraculously bring your answer back. Then save it, before doing anything else!

It is infuriating when this happens - especially being asked to log in when the top of the page specifically has a message welcoming you aboard, as it were! But you should be able to get around it by using the process above. Good luck.

Great advice vittoria - I learnt the hard way that copy and pasteing is the best and only way to keep your sanity.

Another thing I found out only yesterday is that if someone is posting exactly at the same time as youself then you will be asked to log in again and again - and also lose your answer!
