My philips is 3 years old - was one of the first of its kind - and not a second's trouble.

Buy Toshiba. We've got three at home and we've never had any trouble with any of them. One of them, an RD-XS34SB is brilliant.
I have 2 Panasonics a DMR-EX75EB and DMR-EX85EB both brilliant.
Sony RDR HX870 has the all important series link for Freeview recordings or if you just want a PVR then Humax 9200t is hard to beat. Very reliable and easy to use
