I have an Advent laptop and the disk drive isn't recognising disks. I have been on the help and support bit but it doesn't have an option for it. Does anyone have any idea?

What do you mean by isn't recognising disks? Do yu mean the CD/DVD drive, the diskette drive or the hard disk?

What are the symptoms?
are the discs (got to be cd/dvd?) burned ... or commercially produced?

discs burned on an oldish drive can be difficult to read
