i have a laptop with only 1 ethernet port connection, this is connected to a dockin point in my halls of residence at university allowing me access to the internet over a IVPN. i also have an xbox 360 that i wud like to play on live with. unfortunatly plugging the xbox straight into the docking point doesnt work. i wud like to no if i can split this 1 dockin point on my laptop into 2, so that i can connect to the internet and my xbox at the same time, hence using the internet through my laptop for my xbox

You'll need to feed your xbox through your laptop; in which case you need another ethernet port, something like this:

This may help if the uni only allows certain registered MAC addresses on the network (such as your laptop). However, the uni may well still be blocking the xbox's communications (packet types or ports), and so it still may not work.
