Stupid question, I can't configure my Airport. Open Network Preferences just gives me loads of jargon I don't understand - TCP/IP etc; surely it should just sort of....work?

At the top right of your screen is the airport icon. It looks like a wedge of cheese or something if it's turned off. Click it, turn airport on, and it'll find networks and show them in that menu.
