My daughter is off to Uni next month and has a new lap top to take with her. It has come preloaded with various pieces of software. However, when we tried to connect it to the Internet by taking the lead out of the home computer which is Virgin Media Broadband and putting it into the lap top we couldn't get a connection. Does it need a piece of software? Also, does uni accommodation usually have a internet connection point in each bedroom? Thanks in advance.

I don't know about the university so can't help you with that.

I suggest you switch the modem off at the mains, turn the latop off, connect with the cable then switch back on. Hopefully this will work.

If it doesn't, try installing the installation cd from Virgin on to the laptop.
If memory serves, Virgin like to know the unique address of what is plugged into their kit. The easiest way to get the laptop connected in the short term would be via their setup CD, but in the long term I think you'd be better off with a wireless router.
