Im hopeing one of you clever internet people can help here.  Ok this is the problem; i just moved in to a new student flat and each of our bed rooms have a internet connection, i have it pluged in corectly and when i look under internet conection the connection shows up as a LAN connection (think it says 1394 but for got to write it down and i cant check because im now in the libary to use the internet), the problem is when i try to open a internet window , the page that show up is the one when there is no connection and ive tried to acces a couple of sites and the computer keeps telling me im off line.

Does anyone have any suggestions of what is wrong and how to fix it?

Oh i also have AOL installed on to the lap top as in my old place this was our ISP (i know there rubbish it wasnt my choice) should i try uninstalling AOL to see if thats the problem?

1394 is a firewire port not a proper LAN connection.

There should be another connection in there.

Thanks for the quick reply, this is the only connection showing up, there is no other connection under internet options (could it be to do with the cable i have, it was the one that came with the computer). Ive only had dial-up before now so havent a clue whats wrong its driving me mad.
If there isn't another connection there, you need to check your network card is working properly. If this is Windows XP :

Right click My Computer on the desktop, Properties, Hardware, Device Manager. Under there is a section for network adapters. There should be the 1394 adapter AND another one. Has it got a red cross next to it or a yellow exclamation mark?
Oh, and yes, uninstall AOL if you're not going to be needing it.

Thanks OBonio, i'll have a look when i get back home, then report back with what it says.
sounds daft, but are you sure you're plugging the ethernet cable into the ethernet port, and not the port for the modem?

fo3nix, it wont fit ones RJ11 and ethernet (as you know) is RJ45.

To be honest if its XP It would have picked up the NIC and gone straight into 'DHCP Mode' (as it does !). Its probable that DHCP is not enabled on the router.

Make sure everything is plugged in, On the PC / Laptop Type

IPCONFIG /ALL

Then post the result on here and we will tell you whats up (well we will try anyway !).

Thanks for all your help, but ive sorted it, yay! The girls in the flat upstairs helped me, as they use the same type of connection.  It was my cable it wasn't working, i tried one of their cables and it worked.

Yet a gain thankyou everyone for the help.
