What exactly are you trying to do?
your PC should be able to play CD/DVDs anyhow.

if you want to "back up" your collection
you just need a dvd ripper

A colleague does not have a DVD drive on her computer.refuses to have a TV in the house, but has some DVDs from some craft organisation and has been given a DVD player.Trying to view these with minimum outlay.I have already suggested replacing or adding to the drive or buying an external USB drive.
You can get cards and external devices that will enable her to view her DVD player through her PC (and devices that will show the DVD's output on a monitor). Google/eBay video cards - but if her PC is so old that it doesn't have a DVD drive, it may struggle. A DVD drive will be cheaper and a lot less hassle!

Even cheaper would be a small TV! (People often give them away on Freecycle).
