I am assuming that you mean a stand alone DVD recorder and not a PC one....if so then the Yamada range of dvd's have a VERY good write up

and model DVR-8000. You can go to Kelkoo.com and do a price comparison but it should be cheaper than most.

I have the DVX 6600 which plays mpegs and avi files and has been superb.

I also have a Yamada player, and it's fantastic. Plays anykind of format you can imagine! If you want a good machine at a reasonable price you can't go wrong with a Yamada, and there are deals all over the net!
you got choice of dvd-rw[many manufacturers] or dvd-ram[panasonic and maybe hitachi] - dvdram is better but dvdrw has more softwares and availability. So if you just want to record tv programs, get dvd-ram because it is easier and better but if you want to do creative editing of recordings with your pc, you be better off getting dvd-rw. i have dvdram it took me 6 months to get good softwares for dvd editing, okay now with tmpgenc but it is tough to get softwares.
