I've had 2 archos mp3 players and after a year the battery life is down from 12 hours to 2.
Is this a common failing and what can be done?

buy new batteries. Rechargable batteries do lose their charge after a while. It is the recharging that lessens the life span so charging half used batteries all the time reduces their life span.
It depends how often you use the player, how often you recharge, etc.

Try fully draining the battery, leave it a few hours, then putting it on charge and leaving it for a few hours after it's become fully charged. See if that makes any difference.

If not, either your batteries are a bit faulty (it is possible, but unlikely really), or they've just had a large amount of use. Either way, you'll need new batteries.

If they're removable it'll be simple. If they aren't, then you may need to send them somewhere.
I have a 2001 Archos Jukebox still running on its original batteries. It gets used and abused too. Try charging to full and leaving to run overnight to flatten and repeat to try to teach the batteries new tricks..
