How do I get them into alphabetical order? (I've looked at one of the previous answers but that doesn't seem to work)

Open the menu, right click on any favourite & choose SORT BY NAME

I've tried the obvious things but they don't work (ie right clicking an individual favourite)(Windows XP)

You need to select favourites from the task bar -the one alongside file,edit,view-( not the standard buttons bar) .Open it and then select a folder.Right click while in that folder and you will see 'sort by name'.Click on that and it will sort alphabetically.If you dont have any folders yet it will still work with any list of files.
