What is the difference between files with extension .htm and .html?

There is no difference between .htm and .html files.

Use of .htm instead of the more correct .html is a throwback to the days when OSs such as DOS/Windows 3.x used the 8.3 file naming convention and could only handle a three letter extension.

If you are creating a web site then decide if you are going to use htm or html and then stick to it.

It can be very confusing having both extensions on the same site.
