Microsoft is well-known for underestimating specs. Double whatever microsoft say to have a more stable faster system.
Or ditch Vista and stick with XP to have a more stable faster system.
You only need 512mb to be Vista capable but it wont run Aero particularly well or indeed anything else. When I ran Vista it used 700Mb of RAM before I'd even run any apps, but that was a Beta so not a fair reference.

I've read several reports saying that 2Gb really should be the minimum if you're planning on gaming.

Some Microsoft blokey recently said that 4Gig of RAM is best for Vista. Apparently all the PCs that Microsoft have been demoing VIsta with have all had 4Gb.
Apparently VIsta does a lot of prefetching, that is it loads stuff into RAM if it thinks you might need it. As memory is a hell of a lot faster than hard disks programs appear to load and run quicker.
Put it this way - by the time you can afford the kind of spec. needed to run it properly, it might even be stable enough to be worth buying
