If i run setup.exe from C:\windows\options\cabs will my precious data be safe? I seem to remember having done this before but don't recall the result.

Any files in desktop folders will be lost. This caught me out last time I had to reinstall.
If you install to a different location (C:\windows.000 for example) all your data will be safe but you will have to install all the device drivers and applications again. If you over install to c:\windows you will have all the drivers/applications but the my docs gets written over. If you have your data in a seperate file (c:\porn for example) this will also be safe.
