Completely deleting a hard drive

I have the hard drive of my old laptop which I am using as an external hard drive, backing up the contents of my new notebook. The hard drive is now in a caddy.

The drive capacity is 40GB, and I have deleted everything visible on the drive, when accessed via Safe Mode. However when clicking Properties, the drive's capacity still shows 7GB still used up...

Does anyone know how to completely wipe the drive and start afresh?

If it was on your laptop, it probably has two partitions. One of which was probably hidden, and contained a recovery system.
Go to Start/Programs/Administrative Tools/Computer Management.
In the storage section, click on Disk Management
You should see it there as Disk 1, and it will probably show two partitions.
Right-click on each of the partitions in turn and delete them. Then create a new partition which extends over the whole disk, and format it
