CD writer/re-writer

I asked my mate to burn something onto a CD last night and he told me that he could only burn onto CD-Rs, but not CD-RWs. I'm not saying I disbelieve him (coz I don't!), but I thought a CD writer/re-writer was the same thing - is it?

Now, yes. How old is his drive? The really old ones just did cdr -- but those are many years old.

As fo3nix says, older drives could only do CDR, and judging by some of the questions on AB, there are an awful lot of old computers in use out there!

I think you have for format a CD/RW before you can use it, and this can take a while.

Maybe he has never formatted one before trying to use it, or maybe he did not want to wait.

When I've burned to a CD/RW (or even a CD/R), I just put it in the machine, hit the button and away we go.

Oh, and before anyone asks why I can't do this task myself at present, it's coz me PC do be broked! :o)

My PC at home can only burn to CD-Rs. I did buy some CD-RWs (I assumed it could do both) but no joy. It's about 4 years old I think.
