Sure, you can just link them to your PC - but how do you think the audience is going to see anything on the smartboard unless you have a projector? If there's nothing on the smartboard, what are you going to interact with?

I was not thinking of using it for an audiencerather using it for myself / I was hoping it could be linked to the pc directly like a huge monitor
I have bad eye sight so using a smart board as a montior would be ideal.
Unless I have to go through the expense of a projector also
I'm afraid you will have to get a projector as well. The smart board just acts like a giant graphics tablet. You use a special stylus to interact with it. The only way the image appears on the board is via projection. They are great for schools or for business training, but rather expensive at around 3000 for individual home use.

If you just want a giant monitor, then it does not have to be interactive and you will only need a projector and a plain screen - slashing your costs to a quarter of that. Bear in mind though that the high intensity bulbs used in these projectors are both delicate and very expensive. Check it out before committing yourself.
MangoPete, I've got to ask - what are you trying to look at? If it is 'normal' PC stuff, then a large (ie. over 19") monitor should do if you're sitting near to it? If you are talking about watching DVDs, then you have to investigate projectors with screen (or a sheet on the wall!! (LOL) vs large (and expensive) LCD TVs vs Plasma (even more expensive) screens vs rear projection screens (bit out of fashion now?).
