Does anyone know if MS publisher 97 is compatable with windows XP. When I try to instal it I get an error message and I really need to print off 300 xmas party invitation tickets. Any advice would be appreciated.

Yes, it is compatible with Windows XP.. What does your error message say?

Using any newever version of Publisher will allow you to open your 97 document, can you get your hands on one of them to install and try if 97 persits at being un-installable.

The error message says "Setup is unable to open the data file 'E:\pub97|acmsetup.stf.' run setup again from where you originally ran it. when I press the OK button I get a dialog bx that says Setup error 723. The processing of top level information has failed. I haven't a later version of MS Pub to try anything else.
I apologise that this post doesn't directly answer your question but I thought you might be interested in a 'back-up strategy'.

If you can't get Publisher to work, why not switch to a different DTP program? PagePlus SE is at least as good as Publisher 97 and it's free, here:
