Compatible version of publisher with vista

i deperately want a version of office or publisher on my laptop that has vista on. everytime i download publisher it tells me that it can't access certain files. i've also tried office 97 but still had no luck. i used a friends copy of publisher and my laptop crashed. i had to re boot the wole system from scratch.
i just need someone to explain in simple terms what i'm doing wrong or if i can installpublisher onto my laptop at all. i thought vista was going to be an up graded version of xp but it isn't. its crap. please help.

unfortunately vista isn't vey much like XP at all (not in the engine room anyhow.
