ive always wondered this too! ...come on people, tell us!
Hmmm, ok i will tell you. Certain people from al areas get sent a kind of TV guide. They then post it back and tick the things they watched. This then gets inputted into a computer and a ratio is calculated from the amount of people in that area. Well, thats what i got told anyway. I think the real reasons are thatbthey have little cameras in the set top boxes, or they monitor the power surge when there is a break. But to be honest, i think the real reason is that they just make them up...

ahh i see..how very confusing. thanks anyway. further suggestions welcome.
Mr ben5 is fairly close, I saw a bit on telly about it, from what I remember the people selected are given a remote for the telly that also logs all the channel changes etc and each person is given a separate code so they can monitor which member of the family is changing channels.
Question Author
ahh i see..so roughly how many people hvae these remotes? surely it has to be loads to get a fair average?
From what I remember it was a surprisingly low number, just a few hundred or similar.
The correct answer to this mystery isn't so strange really. My dad was chosen in our village to participate in a scheme wherebye a company installed another little digi type box alongside his television. it recorded the channels he watched, made a record of same and was transmitted back to base through a modem in the box in the early hours of the morning. The guy who fitted it said there are at least one of these for every 1000 people watching television so your next door neigbour could be one. it is totally automated, you do absolutely nothing whatever, no special remotes, nothing, but once every 3 months you get a nice little voucher to spend at a selection of shops, I seem to remember that it was around 30.00 or so. The company that installed it works for all the channels so is impartial. He worked for the Broadcasting Standards or some such. Hope this answers your mystery
'Know', not 'no'.
