In simple terms, generally if you can record on one type, you can't record on the other.

Just different formats. If you are using a computer drive (CDR/W or DVDR/W) then it probably doesn't matter. However, if you're talking about stand-alone recorders/players, you should think about buying a recorder that can record on both formats (most will PLAY both formats). This gives you flexibility and the ability to record the appropriate type if you are giving them to friends/relatives or playing them on another player in the house.
