On a normal computer keyboard why do the letters J & F have a raised bit on them?

I believe it's so blind people can orientate themselves on the keyboard.

Yes this is true, likewise with the telephone and number 5.

Oh yer have never noticed that one :-)

They are there for "touch-typists" to use.


It is so they do not need to keep looking where their 'lead fingers' are.


as JordyLad says, it's also for touch-typists.

you should have your index fingers on the F and J keys, with the other 3 fingers to the left and right of those keys respectively. rest your thumbs on the space bar, and your hands should be curved as though you're holding two tennis balls. from that position you can reach any of the keys on the keyboard very quickly. you also can go back to the original position again without having to look where you fingers are.
