When installing audio devices on Windows updates they seem to knock out the Sound completely. The volume icon just disappears. I can recover the situation by using System Restore or using the Sound troubleshooter. There is something wrong somewhere? ? Anybody any ideas please.?

What do you mean by 'knock out the sound'? Just that the volume control vanishes?

If so, the drivers etc may be installing correctly, but their default is not to show the volume control in the system panel. Look for it in Programs, Accessories, Entertainment as well. If it's there, look in Control Panel, select Sounds and enable the 'Show Volume Icon in Taskbar'.

If there's really no sound system, then you may be installing the wrong drivers. Have a look in Device Manager for any problem devices.

Catso I have now been through a number of trouble shooters and the sound is back on, but I dont know why? or what caused it to go in the first place. Some of the recent Windows Updates that I installed were to do with the AC 97 Audio device, so maybe there was some incompatability there. Or maybe it was something to do with the installation of a recent anti spy device ? the Defender. On the second time that it occurred I used System Restore and that brought the volume Icon back. Anyway thanks for your interest. I think I will leave well alone unless you have anything further to add.
