Someone has told me that having lots of shortcuts on your desktop can slow your pc down. Is this true?

The short answer is no.
I don't know for sure but I would say it's either NOT true, or the slowing up is so minimal as to be unoticable. Having lots of different programmes running in the background does however slow things up. Some you need running, some you don't.
It will take longer to boot up and will slow down the system a little (the more files you have, the larger the registry gets). If you have a remote profile on a network it will slow booting time even more.
These sorts of things come from a time when were all running 386's and even the slightest thing was a problem.

These days it's insignificant.
