why is it that what ever capacity mb on my smart card I can only record 80 seconds of movie on my digital camera

Here is a blind guess....on the camera there is a setting that allows you to vary the length of capture. The setting is at the default of 80 seconds. As I said above it is a blind guess....but it sounds like something that might be causing your problem.

It could be a limit to the buffer memory on the camera. Mine (a Fuji 6900Z), dumps things into a buffer before writing them to the memory card.
