is it possible to boot an operating system from a DVD, if so how???

You can boot DOS from diskette (and maybe DVD) and Windows and Linux from DVD. You can also get a bootable Windows 98 diskette.


When you install Windows XP, when you first start the install, you are in fact booting from the CD or DVD just to get you going.


There is a version of Linux that boots and runs from CD or DVD, but I cannot remember the name.

OS's on CD/DVDs are known as live distributions. Linux has several variants (Slax, Knoppix, Gnoppix). Have a look here for more details : http://www.linux-live.org/
