i have a great idea for a website but the domain name i was going to use has just been snapped up. the person who has registered it has no website in use and seems to just be sitting on the name to spite me. is there anywhere i can find out how long it is registered for and any other details about the name/owner? thanks

Hi. Go to www.allwhois.com and enter the domain name and it should give you info like:
Registrant:
Registrant type:
Registrant's address(unless they want it kept private): Registrant's agent:
Relevant dates like:
Registered on, Renewal date and Last updated
Registration status:
Name servers:

bbc.co.uk up for renewal in dec this year - anyone fancy trying to hijack it !
I suspect (although I have literally no evidence) that some of the domain registering sites look at the lists of domain name queries that are not taken up to see if there are any that they (or maybe individuals working for them) think sound good and snap them up.

I had an idea for a site, checked the domain's availability on a site and then decided to mull it over for a couple of days. When I went to register it, it had gone (and is, still now, occupied by one of those pages offering it for sale). It could just be coincidence but now I won't enter a domain into one of those sites unless I'm ready to register it there and then.

thanks guys
You can use the WHOIS service of any domain name registrar like Hosting3i.com, etc. If that guy is not interested to sell the domain name, you can backorder it. Backorder of domain name consist free domain registration. You can get more info at http://www.hosting3i.com
