Getting my printer to work

Help, please. I'm going mad. I have bought a Canon MP390 multi-functional printer (fax, photoprinter, photocopier, printer and scanner). It is certified as 100% OK by my local computer service people. It works fine in its non-computer roles (fax, photoprinter, photocopier) but my computer refuses to print to it or scan from it. Its drivers are correctly installed and my computer recognises its existence in every way possible. But when I try to print to it I get 'Printer Not Responding' every time. I finally decided that the fault lay with my Windows ME operating system (which was becoming glitchy anyway) so I installed Windows XP. No difference. Anyone any ideas? Canon have none.
