Is there a difference between white top and silver top unbranded cdrs? Is one better quality than the other or is just a matter of preference?

No their the same. Its just the finish that they put on. Get which everone your think looks coolest!!
Another thing which I wish more people knew on a related subject, so I'll stick it here: contrary to the record industry's claims, music CD-Rs are not more reliable, nor better quality than regular cheap computer CD-Rs. They are exactly the same product, but you pay 2.99 for a music CD-R and only 20p for a computer CD-R. Why? Because the recording industry levy the difference as a 'tax' onto the cost since they assume you're going to copy music illegally, and it helps subsidise their 'losses'. A case of guilty until proven innocent I fear?!
It doesnt matter just paint.
