I now have two pc's,I decided to buy a new one instead of upgrading the old one, At the moment i have them running seperatly, the only problem is that i have to unplug my modem from the old one and then plug it into the new one,my question is this, should i keep them apart or is it better to network them together, I do have an external hard drive which i used to transfer some items from one to the other.

Old pc runs on windows 98, new one on XP,

Thanks

What kind of modem? If it is a broadband modem then get a router then both PCs can be on the internet at the same time. If it is a dialup modem then the new PC will have a modem already in it so just get a dual telephone plug. If it were me, I would archive all your old data then only use the XP machine as I think windows 98 should be banned.
The best solution is to network the computers together then one computer can access the internet via the other computer (remove the modem from the second computer) There is plenty of information on the net as to how to network two computers together http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=fh;EN-US;winxp&Product=winxp could be a good place to start. Incidently, Windows 98 is,was and probably always will be a good operating system. It has it's faults but probably not as many as can be found in Windows XP original (without the numerous patches).
